Morels popping in central Illinois
Despite cold temperatures and even frost, morel mushroom hunters in central Illinois have reported numerous nice finds of morel mushrooms in the past few days. So far, most morels are running fairly small in size. But hunters are finding both yellows and greys and in decent numbers. South-facing slopes have been a good place to target. Here are some of the reports from various sources in the Peoria area. Mike Biros (pictured at right with some of his findings so far) has picked more than 80 grey morels and close to 15 in the past few days from around his home outside Eureka.
