More bad legislation introduced
Every year I sift through dozens of bad bills that affect hunting in Iliinois. But this year is shaping up to be one of the worst. Usually, you can tell exactly which special-interest group is behind the proposed legislation. But this year everything seems to be aimed at taking total control away from the Department of Natural Resources. Now, I’ve had my share of disagreements with the DNR. I think they should be forthright with information on harvest data and management ideas. In a perfect world, it would be nice if there were no political ties to the operation of the DNR. But short of miracles happening, we do the best with what we have. That includes standing behind the wildlife ...

Coyote hunting fiasco explained
When I was writing about the apprentice hunter license and the youth seasons, I left readers with a simple sentence. “And don’t even get me started on the existing law that makes it illegal to shoot coyotes from any kind of tree stand.” Unfortunately, this was no joke. The way the statute currently reads, it is illegal to shoot coyotes from a treestand. The law exists, and it is enforced. Word from Springfield is, that’s it’s at the discretion of the CPO whether or not a ticket will be written. But it is very real. Here’s the exact text from the Wildlife Code: (520 ILCS 5/2.33) from Ch. 61, par. 2.33) (Text of Section from P.A. 95-196) Sec. 2.33. Prohib...

Finally getting the website done
© By Othmar Vohringer As you all have noticed I have not posted much on this blog lately. I can assure you it was not for the lack of topics to write about. In fact I have a long must-do-list sitting next to my computer on the desk. There are two new products on the market I want to introduce to you. Next on the list is a column for the My Stand blog about hunting ethics. The Chief Editor of Red Ash Outdoors Magazine is anxiously waiting for me to submit a feature article on coyote hunting. The list continues with a reminder that it is soon time to send out a questionnaire to my next interview guest. And so the list goes on with topics, news and information that I would like to post on my...

Where To Find Comfortable Sleeping Bags
If you are planning a camping trip and need to pick comfortable sleeping bags for yourself or for your family you would have to consider different sizes especially if you have children camping with you. Ideally the ones which are able to provide enough leg room and ample body space are the best options. Some sleeping bags also come with hoods which have drawstrings so you can adjust the hood accordingly.

An Update On Brad, Feb. 10, 2008
My oldest Son, Brad, finished his third round of chemo last week.  He had sailed through the first 2 with a minimum of discomfort, but had a couple of bad days with this last one.  He?s over it now and feels fine. Brad and a nice buck we rattled up in 2006. We visited his Oncologist last Friday and he told us that the lesions on Brad?s lungs had been reduced!  Praise the Lord!  He said one spot on Brad?s vertebrae wasn?t reduced and that some tumors respond slower to chemo that others.  The doc recommended radiation to eliminate the spot.   We then visited his Radiologist and were told the treatment would be a 10 to 15 minute ?shot? daily for 15 days and this procedure, for this type of t...

Why Camping With Kids Is Fun
Camping with kids can be quite challenging as well. When the restrictive nature of urban homes is not able to contain the effervescence of childhood, imagine what letting them loose in the great outdoors can do to them. Before you start out, ensure you have a set of rules framed and explained and make sure the kids follow them. If you have an older child, make them responsible for the younger ones.
