Camping and Boating insects tips
Fire Ants These inflict dangerous insect bites only if you are sensitive or get stung by many (at least dozens) at once. The bite is very painful. Watch where you step or sit down if you are in fire ant territory. Ticks Ticks in the east and mid west can carry Lyme Disease. In the west they carry Colorado Fever and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. They usually are a threat early in the summer, or later at higher elevations. Tick bites become rare by the end of August. Check yourself a couple times daily for ticks (with a friend's help, if possible). Slowly pull them loose if they have already bitten you. More insect tips

New Stomping Grounds
During a jog about a month ago, I noticed a small parking lot newly cut into a patch of woods along my road. A sign near its entrance announced that those woods were now part of the Washtenaw County Natural Area Preservation system. Hot damn, I thought. Another place to wander, and a just short walk from home at that. Weather and assorted busyness kept me from getting there since, but with MLK day off and not too much to prepare for tomorrow, I squeezed in a visit after lunch today. Just in from the parking lot lies a widely strewn, semi-picturesque, collection of refuse. It's a blight on the land, yes, but when I was a kid it excited me to happen on stuff like this in the woods--not just...

Hunt With Your Children, Not For Them!
When I was just a boy I knew a family who's daughter went missing. She was gone for a couple of weeks and I got to witness first hand the anguish this family endured as they searched for their daughter. I sympathize with anyone who has gone through this. In this case there was a somewhat happy ending as the girl returned but I know there were problems that needed to be resolved. So when I first saw SCI's sticker , it hit home.

Death And Taxes
Benjamin Franklin had it right when he said, "But in this world nothing is certain but death and taxes." But liberal politicians want to ensure that upon your death, they get your farm, land, or business too. If you are a small farm, land, or business owner, or simply have not heard of the "Death Tax" and its dangers, then you need to pull your head out of your backside and wake-up, because while death and taxes are certain, taxes should never follow death!

How Not To Hunt For Turkeys!
Hunting spring birds is one of my favorite activities. And even though I always try to do everything just like I am supposed to, sometimes Murphy's law steps in. When this happens, persevere, don't give up.

Here Come de Judge
Yesterday, out of the blue, I was asked to judge the annual writing contest of a regional outdoor writers association. I won't say which one to preserve anonymity (I can see it now... bribes of bamboo rods, bird dog pups, engraved fly boxes rolling in daily...), though its members are widely published. How did this happen? "We stumbled across Find the River," the man from the writer's association said when he called yesterday, "and we said, by God, that's our judge!" OK, stop snickering. Actually, in the past, I've done some volunteer work with the VP of the association, and she remembered that I teach environmental rhetoric and writing and that I have some passing acquaintance with the o...
