| Huron River, 7/27 |
Went down to the Huron at Island Park for an hour before dark last night. Fished olive and black wooly buggers and got only nips. Switched to a brown streamer with yellow rubber legs and a copper conehead and caught 4 10-12" smallmouth in 5 casts, plus some smaller ones and a 7" rock bass. My best rockie to date out of the Huron. Was a little harried when I got to the river last night--it had been a busy afternoon and I got to the water later than I wanted to. I rigged in a grim haste and waded into the river with all the expansive attentiveness that jogging on a treadmill demands. I didn't notice until I first changed flies what a perfect night it was to be outdoors--still, neither hot n...

| Manning: DNR needs commission |
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources needs to be shifted to control of a commission and taken out of the political spectrum. So says former DNR Director Brent Manning in a Sunday interview with Dale Bowman of the Chicago Sun-Times. Manning’s call for a commission is not his first. But in the face of yet another round of budget cuts for the DNR he had built to such a respected level, it is particularly timely. Writes Bowman: Manning envisioned a commission selected from something like the Conservation Congress, which featured representatives from park districts, forest preserves and conservation, hunting, fishing and paddling groups. He thought it might be best to use the IDN...

| Carp-a-thon turns 20 |
The Coon Creek Casters fishing club was in its infancy in 1989 when the membership decided to stage a carp-catching tournament. “We only had 12 members back then,” said Bill Myers, club president and a founding member. “We didn’t have a whole lot of people in the first tournament, either.” The Belvidere-based club and the annual Carp-A-Thon tournament would see steady growth, though. | Outdoors Insider, with Dale Sunderlin: Bad guys (Star Beacon) |
Well, the bad guys just lost one more state they could run to after committing a wildlife violation. Ohio is, and has been, a member of the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact (IWVC), an agreement whereby participating states share information about fish and game violators and honor each other?s decision to deny licenses and permits.
