Beekeeper offers lessons on his hobby
CAMPTON HILLS (AP)—For a mere hobbyist, Bob Sobel sure can tell you a lot of fascinating facts about beekeeping. Like, did you know the scent of bananas puts honeybees in a foul mood because it signals danger? Or that bees are friendliest when it’s sunny and warm? “Bees have personalities, too,” says Sobel, a nature-lover who started beekeeping in his spare time about five years ago, “just like us.” This fall, community groups and individuals can observe Sobel in action — and learn the art of beekeeping themselves — through a new educational program sponsored by Campton Township. Sobel, 61, has agreed to share his knowledge of beekeeping as ...

Sea Sick
This ling fell for an old trick.  Bob Baugh nailed this 45 pounder, not too far out in the Gulf of Mexico.  The ?line cut? on the fish?s skin shows plainly. Before sun up, on the outskirts of Freeport, Texas, we stopped at the only, open convenience store and bought us some ham, bread and snacks for our offshore trip that morning.  Bob and I had been planning this, mid week, trip for almost 2 weeks and finally ?caught? some nice, calm weather ? seas 1 to 2 feet, with winds calm to 5 MPH, all day.  It would be hot, but what?s new for summer along the Texas Gulf coast? We were going to try out Bob?s, new 20 foot, aluminum, deep vee, boat, with a 60 HP motor.   It would ?scream? in our bays,...

Sanganois repairs on the way
For a change, even those who don’t draw a duck blind at Sanganois Fish and Wildlife Area today have cause to celebrate. The state is finally going to fix Barkhausen Levee. After six years of enduring a levee breach that superintendent Doug Jallas said “ripped the site in half,” the Department of Natural Resources has finalized a repair plan for Sanganois — a popular waterfowl area located between Beardstown and Bath on the east side of the Illinois River. Laverdiere Construction Inc. of Macomb should be on the job this week to start plugging the 300-foot hole in Barkhausen Levee. The breach has been a constant headache for Sanganois and for nearby private landowner...
