| Largemouth Bass Fishing For Numbers Instead of Hogs - Sometimes It's Fun |
Sometimes just catching fish is the primary objective of the day, and landing a hog is not so important. One of the best ways to tie into a huge number of largemouth bass during the summer is to fish at dawn with some ultra light crankbaits and grubs. Smaller fish don't hunt at night (because they'll get eaten), and they don't hunt during the day in the hot summer sun.

| Parks feel budget cuts |
BRIMFIELD — Tourism. Wildlife. Jobs. Public safety. A half-dozen advocacy groups met Tuesday at Jubilee College State Park to outline Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s $14 million slash from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources budget. “The funding is going to be cut as of this Thursday,” warned Bob Jorgensen, chairman of the Heart of Illinois chapter of the Sierra Club, urging outdoors enthusiasts to contact their legislators. “It’s not just a one-year belt-tightening,” said Eric Schenck, regional biologist for Ducks Unlimited. “ This is the type of cut that will have consequences for several years to come.” Among the worries: Losing $2....

| Embarking on a Bird Watching Vacation |
Bird watching has been one of my favorite experiences, and is a relaxing way to spend a vacation. Why? In my view, birds are simply unique. There are diverse types of birds and their behaviors differ greatly from each other. A parrot will fervently imitate the words that we utter to it, a flamingo will showcase its wings of myriad colors, a peacock will strut elegantly in the aviary, a penguin will wander charmingly in their group, a hawk will stealthily stalk its prey and many more.

| Lawmakers hope to approve Great Lakes compact |
WASHINGTON (AP)—A compact to prevent the diversion of water from the Great Lakes has widespread support in Congress and a strong chance of winning approval by the end of the year, lawmakers said Wednesday. House and Senate leaders from the region said they did not detect any significant opposition to the plan and would aggressively push to complete the process this year to provide more protections for one of the world’s largest sources of fresh water. “It will be done by the end of this session, I assure you,” said Rep. James Oberstar, a Minnesota Democrat who leads efforts in the House. Senate leaders, however, were more cautious, noting their chamber can be unpre...

| Stop Using Topwater Lures For Largemouth Bass |
You walk down the aisles of your sporting goods store and you see them-the top water lures. They look so appealing, like you could catch every fish in the lake the next time you used them. You have flashbacks about the last time you caught a fish busting the surface and ripping apart your lure.

| A Sweaty Hunt |
Last Saturday evening, with the temperature still hovering around 95, I snuck into one of my deer blinds just to see what I could see. Packing my trusty .17 HMR, I was looking for a stray predator, but with a full moon and the temperature, my chances of seeing anything were slim. In the picture, notice how green and lush the cover looks, but in reality, our area is locked in a severe drought! There was a nice breeze, but my ghillie coat was blocking most of it, and the sweat was pouring off of me as I sat and saw nothing! Right at dusk, I half-heartedly blew two rounds of an injured rabbit call, not expecting results and none presented themselves. My sweaty frame of mind didn?t ?exci...
