| Bird survey aims to be true |

A century ago, getting a handle on the state’s bird population required long rides on train and horseback, followed by miles on foot. Fifty years later, a husband and wife team duplicated the survey to see how much things had changed. And researchers just now are re-doing the study for the third time, using the same methods but adding some high-tech twists. Like the globalization of industry that leaves a few giant companies to compete in the marketplace, Illinois birds have become more homogenous, with a few hardy species dominating.
