| The Art Of Treestand Placement |
There are those who walk through the woods, look at the trees, and decide here is a great spot for a tree stand. Sometimes they are right, but more often they are dead wrong. The chosen tree may be good for the hunter, but it may be all wrong for stand location. It may offer little or no chance for a sportsman to get a clean shot at a buck. A good tree stand, whether it is manmade in a factory or created by the hunter, must meet several criteria. It must be somewhere downwind and within 20 yards of where two or more active deer trails connect. It must offer some concealment from approaching deer that are out of sight of the hunter. A tree that stand will be placed in must have an open spo...

| Night Time Fishing |
A good bass fishing option this time of year is to wait for the sun to go down and do some night fishing. You'll beat the heat and encounter very few other boaters or fishermen.

| BOATS: Glade Runner |
In many places the great river of grass that flows south from Okeechobee through the Everglades and out to Florida Bay is, depending on time and tide, ankle deep. But it is still navigable. The Seminoles and later the cracker Gladesmen criss-crossed the skinny-water labyrinth by poling in long narrow dugout skiffs. It is these [...]

| The Spirit Buck |
By Cliff Schwie -- I would like to share a little history with you before I begin the story. My wife, Rene,, and brother-in-law, Cary, and I have been bowhunting together for many years, trying to get the ultimate "Big Buck." About 3 years ago, my wife was diagnosed with a terminal lung disease that rendered her disabled, meaning she couldn't get into her treestand or do much walking in the woods as she is on oxygen 24/7. Being disabled means she sometimes can't even pull her bow back to shoot. She has a crossbow permit but would much rather use her compound bow when she can. This past November, Cary, at the young age of 35, went on to be with the Lord, leaving a wife and two sm...

| Perch fishing reversal ahead? |
Chicago-area perch anglers may have hope for next year. Dale Bowman of the Chicago Sun-Times writes that “there’s faint hope for eased fishing regulations next year.” Click here to read his column on the subject. Bowman has banged the gong long and hard against the upcoming perch-fishing season closure. He contends that yellow perch are “the heart of the Chicago outdoor experience” and believes the regulation closing perch fishing in July is a bad one. Starting July 1, anglers 16 and older are not allowed to keep perch. Anglers 15 and under can keep 10 perch per day. The closure came in response to a “mysterious” crash in perch populations. But fi...

| Albino buck spotted at Clinton Lake |
The presence of an albino whitetail deer has been luring wildlife watchers to the Mascoutin camgrounds in the Clinton Lake State Recreation Area. Jim Capel of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources told the Bloomington Pantagraph that sightseers are showing up in the mornings and afternoons at the Mascoutin campgrounds at Clinton Lake State Recreation Area south of DeWitt to see the deer. Capel said the buck was born in 2007. “It’s a buck, it’s a little buck, and it’s really kind of cute,” said Capel. “It’s becoming a popular tourist attraction. We get an influx just as it’s getting light and another in the evening. This dude stands ou...

| Retired teachers bands kestrels in Illinois |
NEW ATHENS (AP) — Tom May is used to having a birds’-eye view of baby kestrels. On a recent Tuesday morning, he needed friend Paul Feldker’s help to reach the opening to the 14-foot-high nesting box in the field near Paul’s Waterloo home. “I hear them,” said May, 73, of New Athens, as he put his ear to the box. He lifted the lid to find five 2-week-old kestrel babies. Kestrels are in the falcon family. As birds of prey, they capture field rodents such as mice with their sharp talons. May, a retired earth science teacher, began banding birds in 2002. He was concerned that the West Nile virus had killed many hawks and falcons, and he wanted to see if the ...
