Bird-X is a 45-year-old Chicago firm that makes the 3-D Coyote and other nonlethal and environmentally safe products intended to repel all sorts of pests. Great Lakes compact nears reality
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — A year ago, it seemed a proposed compact designed to prevent raids on the Great Lakes might be sunk by squabbles in the states with jurisdiction over nearly one-fifth of the world’s fresh surface water. Now the deal is close to ratification on the state level, and supporters are beginning to plot strategy for the final step: winning approval from Congress and the White House. On the surface, the task would appear easy. Congress has endorsed more than 200 interstate compacts over the years, including 41 dealing specifically with water management. Gas prices hurting Great Lakes charters
MANISTEE, Mich. (AP) — High gas prices being faced by drivers across the country also are being felt in the Great Lakes sportfishing industry, where some say tournament entries are down and charter boat excursions are being scrapped. The increase in fuel prices to above the $4 a gallon mark has resulted in fewer boats on the lakes, fewer lines in the water and a decrease in the number of fish being reeled in, the News Advocate reported. “I’ve had the most cancellations ever this year,” said Gary Schaefer, charter boat captain of Trout Scout III in Manistee. “People just can’t afford the price of gas just to get up here.” In addition, he said, the ...
