| Four CPOs honored for efforts |

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources Wednesday recognized three Menard County sheriff’s deputies and an Athens police officer for helping with investigations involving poaching and other conservation offenses. Deputies Jason Foulk, Ben Harmening and Jason Huffman and officer Ben Hollis were given plaques during a short ceremony at the Menard County Courthouse. “This should set the example for how good things can come when two agencies work together,” said conservation police Lt. PEORIA - Efforts to save the Illinois River are on hold - and Illinois may lose millions of federal dollars - because the state has held funds. “It’s an outrage,” said state Rep. David Leitch, R-Peoria. “The soil & water conservation districts are slowly being starved to death.” Among several other duties, the county-based Soil & Water Conservation District works with farmers and landowners to keep soil out of the watershed.
