DNR electronic licensing system OK
After four years, the Illinois Department of Natural Resource’s electronic licensing system appears to be working well says Les Winkeler of the Southern Illinoisan. Writes Winkeler: Four years later, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ hunting and fishing license electronic point of sale program seems to be working smoothly. The electronic system was introduced in 2006. There was some initial skepticism from vendors, hunters and anglers, but those concerns appear to have been alleviated. Mushrooming Fun! Well, For Some People
Not many people would think searching for fungi (pronounced: fungee) in the forest, is a fun thing to do. But, it seems to be catching on as a minor hobby with people engaged in other activities, such as fishing, birdwatching, hiking and even hunting. My wife and I do a fair amount of camping and prefer state parks to commercial campgrounds and therefore, find sizable areas of undisturbed woodlands...a really good place to find fungi, mushrooms and, as they once were called, "toadstools". The following piece describes one of my more interesting...to me...occurences that happened just this past September.

Tree-killing beetle found in Iroquois County
SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Emerald ash borers have infested trees near a highway rest stop along Interstate 57 north of Loda. That’s according to the Illinois Department of Agriculture. State officials say field workers spotted the ash tree-killing bugs at the location in Iroquois County. Emerald ash borer larvae were found after the workers noticed about a dozen distressed ash trees. Agriculture Department officials say they plan to put traps out throughout Iroquois County and also in neighboring Champaign, Ford and Vermilion counties to determine if the infestation has spread.
