Susan Dees, a biologist with the Illinois Department of Transportation, sees nothing good in the sea of garlic mustard blanketing the forest floor of her family’s 60-acre woodland in Crawford County. Garlic mustard, an herb brought by early settlers that escaped from its cultivated environment in the 1860s, has been spreading through forests ever since, smothering wildflowers and competing with native species. [A jig and minnow is turning a few walleyes in 4 to 6 feet at lakes Mary, Andrew, and Oscar. Crappies seem to be in and out of the shallows depending on weather conditions, but look to lakes Carlos, Lobster, Darling, Miltona, and Le Homme Dieu when the sun is out. Lake Carlos is the area's best option for northern pike as well.
