Non-resident deer tags sold Sunday
Starting Sunday, non-residents can apply for archery deer permits through the state’s DNR Direct telephone and Internet permit system. There are two ways to purchase a permit. 1. Call 1-888-6PERMIT (1-888-673-7648). 2. Click here . Non-residents can purchase one combination archery permit (one either-sex/one antlerless only) for $400. A total of 25,000 non-resident combination tags will be available for the archery deer season, which opens Oct. 1 and continues through Jan. 15, 2009. Antlerless-only permits will be available throughout the season for $15.50 at local license agents as well as through DNR Direct.

Teen catches record crappie
The spring of the record-setting teenagers continues in Illinois. Fishing earlier this month in a Jefferson County farm pond between Centralia and Mount Vernon, Marcus Miller, 15, caught a 4-pound, 8.2-ounce crappie that should be certified as a state record soon. That the fish didn’t wind up as lunch, instead, is thanks to Miller’s grandfather, Herman Rowcliff. Instead of filleting the fish, Grampa Rowcliff convinced Miller to have his slab weighed on a certified scale at Dan’s Meat Market in Centralia.
