It had been raining for about three days. The water was a steady flow over the Canton Lake dam. The lake itself was dirty, almost looking like melted caramel, but that was normal back in those days. After periods of heavy rain, the lake took in all the surrounding run-off and was just plain dirty. After a few days of clear weather, the lake would calm again with all the sediment slowly sinking to the bottom. The water then became blue again. Thankfully we don’t see that run-off today. | First positive West Nile tests of 2008 |
|
The state health department says mosquito samples collected in Tazewell and DuPage counties are the first positive test results this year for West Nile virus in Illinois. Health officials say it isn’t unexpected to receive positive West Nile results by this time. Last year, the first report of West Nile in mosquito samples came on May 7 in DuPage County. Last year, 101 cases of West Nile in humans were reported in Illinois. That included four deaths. The virus is transmitted to humans through mosquitoes that have picked up the virus by feeding on infected birds. People infected with West Nile can become ill three to 15 days after being bitten.

[Crappie and sunfish activity remains strong in the bays of Gull Lake, Pelican Lake, and Round Lake. During the day walleyes are being found in 24 to 30 feet, but look much shallower during low-light periods. Lakes such as Gull, Round, and North Long have been most productive.
