And Now, Back to Our Heroes
What a great week! I just spent a week hunting with my kids, Nicholas and Katie. Nick managed to shoot two does this last week. We found one of them but lost the other. Katie shot a good doe on Saturday during the youth gun season and then gave us a lesson in tracking. As previously reported Nick laid hands on his first deer with a bow on Thursday night and then on Friday night stuck his second one. We were able to track her for quite a ways but lost her right after she crossed Long Creek. She had already traveled quite a distance by that point so I have to assume it was a non fatal shot. Sure sounded like agood one to me. I was hunting about a hundred yards away and heard the whack when ...

I know, I know....
So much for the every day blogging. My son Nick came to town on Wednesday and we've been hunting ever since. He took a doe Thursday night on his first day of hunting. Pictures will be up soon on that. I got video of the hunt and the hunting widow is studying up on how to get the video on the web. Like I said, I should have my own show. It was way cool. This was Nick's first deer with the bow and we're both pretty pumped up about it. He shot another doe last night but we weren't able to recover that one. Left a great trail and then it just went dry. Searched this morning for blood and the body but no luck. My daughter Katie is hunting this weekend for the Illinois youth gun season. The dee...

I Should Have My Own Hunting Show
Never did get out yesterday. 92 degrees in the afternoon and the wind was blowing 20 mph. Tried mowing the lawn but the blades are so dull all I managed to do was get sweaty and make the lawn look odd at best. But the deer missed me. Just after sundown my intrepid hunting beagle cut loose outside just a howling. In my effort to promote neighborhood harmony I went to shut her up and there they stand. Two does standing right across the road saying, "Hey, aren't you coming out to play? We know you're in there". Only Drew can know the frustration I go through every season. He's had a lot of practice laughing at me or doing a play by play from the stands. Now, to the reason I have titled this ...

The Trophy Doe
As I said yesterday, yesterday for all you yahoos that are blog addicted, I went in search of that trophy doe that all of you want for next year. The weather was terrible. Temp was in the high 80's and the wind was blowing. Seemed like summer again. Even though the wind was blowing a steady 10 - 20 MPH it was a swirlin' down in the bottoms. I saw 4 does during the afternnoon but all were to far away or in the brush to take a shot at. I think the wind was letting them all know I was around. The trophy wasn't there but I could hear my freezer moaning as they went by. It has an echo now when I open it. Didn't hunt this morning. The wind was still blowing and all wrong for the spot I was plan...
