Deer Closure in SE Alaska Not Planned, But Heavy Snows Could Change Plans
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game in a recent news release said that it has no plans no to close the deer hunting season in SE Alaska Game Management Units 1 and 4, as some have asked. Deer numbers are down from the heavy snows of the winter of 2006/2007, but the hunt has not been changed. The news release pointed out that early and heavy snowfalls in October and November could force a re-evaluation of the hunting regulations. If that is the case, the state will make hunters aware through the news media.

Pink Guns
Field & Stream Magazine Online recently launched discussions about pink guns for women and girls in their Field Notes Blog and FSHuntress Blog . I was reminded of this discussion when I flipped through the latest Gander Mountain flyer and went "Awww...how cute!" over two pink guns that are on sale this week. My personal take on pink guns is that they are kinda cute - but not realistic for actual hunting. So for those of you interested in locating a pink gun, I can only find two manufacturers who make pink guns: Remington (two) - Model 870 Junior 20-Ga. (Gander Mountain exclusive) & Model 597 .22LR Rimfire Rifle; Keystone Sporting Arms has a LOT of pink .22 rifles including - Model...

Controlling Your Scent With Chlorophyll
In the pursuit of eliminating human odor you may want to give Chlorophyll tablets a try. Chlorophyll has been used by doctors for years in treating patients with bad breath and body odors. Chlorophyll works on the inside of the human body at the source of the odors. If the right amount of Chlorophyll is taken your body will produce very few odors which is the goal we all want to achieve while hunting deer. One hunter, I forgot his name, on a recent Podcast said that he stops eating meat prior to and during the hunting season. He also shaves his head and the rest of his body hair. Another thing he stated as being essential to his success was the use of Chlorophyll tablets. He said that you...

The First 2007 Monster Bucks
© By Othmar Vohringer The hunting season is still young and already we hear reports of the first big bucks that have been taken in the early bowhunting season. The Daily Citizen reports of twenty-two year old Casey Heine who on September 28 arrowed a huge 35 point buck! Yes you read that right. The buck has 25 countable points! This may very well be an achievement that the young hunter never will repeat again in his lifetime. Heine told the newspaper "The big buck came around the fence line to my left and ran along the marsh toward the doe and fawn," with a doe bleat Heine stopped the buck. With a well placed arrow behind the shoulder blade Casey but the buck on the ground. The scenario g...

Northern pike fishing tips
Pike can become conditioned to big baits that are commonly thrown by the majority of anglers. Some of the fish there are 30 to 40 years old and they have seen just about every bait known to man. Although pike can attain tremendous weight and size, there is something about a small bait under the right circumstances that can work pure magic. Early season is one of those moments. Northern pike are less likely to exert themselves chasing down large prey, but can be convinced to take a swipe at a bite-sized snack.Mepps spinners tip with worms work wonders on less aggressive pike. Walleye Fishing on Lac Saint Louis - Again!
I forgot to report on a great day on the water I had recently with 2 great friends: my business partner, Richard Couture; and my usual walleye fishing partner, Michel Richard (aka Mike Walleye). We dropped the boat in the water at the Lachine pier on Friday morning (first light), took a fast ride to our spot, where we jigged for walleye for a little under 6 hours. We got 47 walleyes, mostly small ones, we only kept about 10 of them for the table. The fillets were all nice and clean - I mention this because this past spring I caught a bunch of real nice looking walleyes in Lac Saint Pierre and most of them were infested with tiny little worms.

Fishing is the World's Most Dangerous Sport!
Tonight I came across a very informative television show called manswers. Besides discussions on boob shapes and bikini sizes, I learned that fishing is the world's most dangerous sport. In fact, they were saying that fishing is the sport most likely to cause death, and that no other sport even comes close. Of course, most of the deaths come from drowning, hitting submerged objects while driving too fast, or just driving while intoxicated. I guess this is another great opportunity to remind you guys to wear your PFDs - because if you fish often enough, you WILL end up in the float one of these days, and if you plan on fishing into old age, you might as well face that fact and make it a ha...

The Bassmaster Classic Now Allowing Women to Fish
This rubs me the wrong way. I saw on ESPN here that *gasp* they will be allowing women to compete in the Bassmaster Classic. "In 2008, the Toyota Women's Bassmaster Tour Angler of the Year, the top angler in the season-long points standings, will qualify for the 2009 Bassmaster Classic. 'Next year promises to be a historic year, with the first female angler qualifying for the Bassmaster Classic,' said Tom Ricks, vice president and general manager of BASS. 'The WBT continues to receive some well-deserved attention and we are excited about this opportunity for the circuit to grow.' " As I commented on that article - What is that??!!!?? Weren't women "allowed" in the big tournament before th...

Don't Spoil Your Big Game
The #1 cause of spoiling wild game comes from washing out the carcass or icing down the carcass. I know this sounds strange and counter intuitive but believe me in this matter. My Father and Brother operate a professional meat processing plant and each year deer are brought in that have spoiled because the hunter washed out the inside of the deer or iced it down thinking they were doing the right thing. The bacteria that spoils meat needs water/moisture to grow and do its damage. Without the moisture there can be no bacteria growth. After field dressing your big game, drain out all of the fluid and then using a clean rag wipe out the inside of the carcass as good as you can. Be sure to wi...
