Morels popping in central Illinois
Despite cold temperatures and even frost, morel mushroom hunters in central Illinois have reported numerous nice finds of morel mushrooms in the past few days. So far, most morels are running fairly small in size. But hunters are finding both yellows and greys and in decent numbers. South-facing slopes have been a good place to target. Here are some of the reports from various sources in the Peoria area. Mike Biros (pictured at right with some of his findings so far) has picked more than 80 grey morels and close to 15 in the past few days from around his home outside Eureka. On Tuesday Bill Brown of Pekin located about 20 yellow morels. “Had about 45 minutes waiting for the dew to dry before spraying and found about 20. I was surprised, as I only found small grays last weekend and it was pretty cold the last couple nights,” Brown wrote. Bruce Combs of Little America found about 50 morels (pictured below with a quarter in the middle to offer perspective) on the south side of a Fulton County hillside on April 27. Most of the 50 were in one patch. Dustin Mahrt and a friend found about 6.5 pounds of morels on Tuesday, both grey and yellow. Tom Nauman’s Morel Mania Web site had several recent reports of small grey morels from Knox County and from Ogle County. But most are very small.
