| Perch fishing reversal ahead? |
|
Chicago-area perch anglers may have hope for next year. Dale Bowman of the Chicago Sun-Times writes that “there’s faint hope for eased fishing regulations next year.” Click here to read his column on the subject. Bowman has banged the gong long and hard against the upcoming perch-fishing season closure. He contends that yellow perch are “the heart of the Chicago outdoor experience” and believes the regulation closing perch fishing in July is a bad one. Starting July 1, anglers 16 and older are not allowed to keep perch. Anglers 15 and under can keep 10 perch per day. The closure came in response to a “mysterious” crash in perch populations. But fishing has been better of late, including this spring when Al Silcroft caught this 15-incher off Waukegan that weighed 1 pound, 8 ounces. But the 2005 year-class is very strong and could lead to a relaxing of the closed season according to Mike Conlin, office director of resource conservation. Writes Bowman: The annual perch assessments are under way. If the 2005 class shows up strong and there is indication of another class, there’s a chance July would be reopened. The IDNR will hold its annual public meeting this fall.
