Just as trout season opened, the New Year's Day cold front coldcocked the fishing. Anglers couldn't catch much but a cold, and one thing remains a cold, hard fact. That won't be the last time. And that's the stone cold truth. Winter fronts send shock waves through Southwest Florida's cold-natured fish, which beat hasty retreats to warm-water refuges. Some species, including snook, crevalle jacks, catfishes and sand bream (striped mojarra), can be killed by extreme temperature changes.
